Joint Replacement Surgery

Joint Replacement Surgery in Jaipur

Joint pain that keeps you from walking, climbing stairs, or sleeping through the night is one of the most common reasons people visit an orthopaedic doctor. When medicines, injections, and physiotherapy stop giving lasting relief, joint replacement surgery is often the most effective way to reduce pain and restore movement. At Jaipur Hospital, our orthopaedic team performs total knee replacement, partial (unicompartmental) knee replacement, and total hip replacement using modern surgical techniques designed for faster recovery and long-term implant life.

What is Joint Replacement Surgery?

Joint replacement is a surgical procedure in which a damaged or worn-out joint surface is removed and replaced with an artificial implant made of metal, ceramic, or high-grade plastic. The implant recreates the smooth, pain-free movement of a healthy joint. This surgery is usually recommended for patients with advanced osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis, or joint damage from old injuries that has not responded to conservative treatment.

Types of Joint Replacement We Perform

  • Total Knee Replacement (TKR) – used when arthritis has damaged the entire knee joint.
  • Partial Knee Replacement (PKR) – suitable when only one part of the knee is affected, allowing healthy bone and ligaments to be preserved.
  • Total Hip Replacement (THR) – recommended for severe hip arthritis, fractures of the hip joint, or avascular necrosis of the femoral head.

Signs You May Need Joint Replacement

You may be a candidate for joint replacement if you experience persistent knee or hip pain during walking or at rest, stiffness that limits daily activities, joint swelling, reduced range of motion, or pain that disturbs sleep. A thorough clinical examination along with X-rays helps our surgeons decide whether surgery, or a non-surgical option, is right for you.

Our Approach to Joint Replacement

Every patient’s anatomy and lifestyle needs are different, so our orthopaedic surgeons plan each surgery individually after reviewing imaging and overall health. We follow standardised surgical protocols to minimise blood loss, reduce operative time, and support quicker mobilisation after surgery. Pain management and physiotherapy are started early so patients can begin walking with support within a day or two of surgery in most cases.

Recovery After Surgery

Recovery time varies with the type of surgery and the patient’s age and health. Many patients start assisted walking within 24–48 hours and are discharged within a few days. A structured physiotherapy programme is essential for regaining strength and joint mobility, and most patients return to routine daily activities over the following weeks to months, with full recovery from major joint replacement typically taking a few months.

Department FAQs – Joint Replacement

There is no fixed age for joint replacement. It is recommended based on the severity of joint damage and pain rather than age alone, though it is most commonly performed in patients above 50-55 years with advanced arthritis. Younger patients with severe joint damage from injury or disease may also require it.

The surgery is performed under anaesthesia, so patients do not feel pain during the procedure. Post-surgery discomfort is managed with pain-relief medication, and most patients find the pain manageable and far less than the chronic joint pain they experienced before surgery.

Most patients start walking with support within a day or two of surgery. Independent walking without support generally improves over 6 to 12 weeks with regular physiotherapy, though full recovery and muscle strengthening can take a few months.

Modern joint implants are designed to last many years with normal use, and most patients do not need a second surgery on the same joint during their lifetime. Implant life depends on activity level, weight, and how well post-surgical guidelines are followed.

Jaipur Hospital is empanelled under Ayushman Bharat, CGHS, ECHS, and several insurance TPAs, which allows eligible patients to avail cashless treatment for joint replacement surgery. Our team can guide you through the documentation process.
