Sex determination is prohibited
Last updated: 20 October 2026
Determining or disclosing the sex of a foetus is not done at Jaipur Hospital. It is prohibited and punishable under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act, 1994 (PC&PNDT Act).
What the law says
- No one may use ultrasound or any other test to find out, or tell anyone, the sex of a foetus.
- No one may advertise, offer or ask for sex determination or sex selection, before or after conception.
- Breaking the law is punishable with imprisonment and a fine, for the doctor, the centre and anyone who asks for or helps with it.
Ultrasound during pregnancy
Ultrasound in pregnancy is done only for medical reasons, such as checking the baby's growth, position and health, and the placenta. A form required by the PC&PNDT Act is filled in for every pregnancy ultrasound, and records are kept as the law requires.
Report a violation
If anyone offers or asks for sex determination, you can report it to the Appropriate Authority under the PC&PNDT Act for your district, or tell us at [email protected].
