Loose skin holds you back

Excess skin after weight loss causes daily discomfort

After massive weight loss, stretched skin cannot shrink back. It hangs in folds, rubs, traps moisture and makes clothing fit poorly.

  • Skin irritation and infection

Folds trap sweat and cause rashes, fungal infections and painful chafing.

  • Pain and limited movement

Heavy skin pulls on the back and shoulders, making exercise and daily tasks harder.

  • Clothing never fits right

Standard sizes do not accommodate hanging skin on the abdomen, thighs or arms.

  • Self-consciousness remains

Weight loss achievement is hidden by sagging tissue that affects body image.

When skin stretches significantly, it loses elasticity and cannot conform to a smaller body shape.

Why Jaipur Hospital

You have worked hard to lose weight, but the loose skin still makes you feel uncomfortable in your own clothes and worried about rashes or pain.

  • NABH-accredited multispeciality hospital since 1991
  • Plastic Surgery department with modular operation theatres
  • Cashless treatment under RGHS, MAA Yojana, CGHS and empanelled insurers

What research shows about body contouring outcomes

  • Physical functioning improved by 28.5%

Pooled analysis of post-bariatric patients showed significant improvement in physical functioning scores after body contouring surgery.

  • Psychological wellbeing improved by 45.7%

Studies reported significant gains in psychological wellbeing following body contouring procedures in massive weight loss patients.

  • Wound healing complications are common

The most frequent complications relate to wound healing, including infection, breakdown and seroma formation.

If it is left untreated

Without surgery, skin folds can lead to chronic rashes, fungal infections and persistent pain. Heavy skin folds may limit mobility and make it harder to maintain weight loss through exercise.

Life after treatment

Most people find daily comfort improves once excess skin is removed and contours are smoother.

  • Easier hygiene and less pain

Skin folds that trapped moisture and caused rashes are gone, reducing infection risk and chafing.

  • Clothing fits better

Most people can wear standard sizes and feel comfortable in fitted clothes again.

  • Movement feels lighter

Removing heavy skin folds reduces pull on the back and makes exercise more comfortable.

  • Sustained weight maintenance

Research suggests body contouring may help patients maintain weight loss longer.

Frequently asked questions

Questions patients ask about body contouring surgery

Which problems are assessed under body contouring surgery?

In short

Body contouring surgery at Jaipur Hospital addresses excess skin and fat after massive weight loss or for body shape improvement. The surgical team evaluates areas such as the abdomen, thighs, arms, back, and buttocks for loose skin, stubborn fat deposits, and weakened muscles. A consultation helps identify which procedures suit your needs.

In detail

Body contouring covers a broad field of plastic surgery procedures that address excess fat and skin.

Common problems include redundant skin after massive weight loss following bariatric surgery, sagging skin that affects appearance, comfort, and clothing fit, and stubborn fat deposits resistant to diet and exercise.

The surgical team assesses the abdomen for excess skin and muscle laxity (abdominoplasty), thighs and arms for loose skin (thigh or arm lift), and the lower body circumferentially (lower body lift). Liposuction may be considered for localised fat removal.

Patients may have lost weight through bariatric surgery, diet, or exercise. The assessment includes physical examination to determine the extent of skin laxity, fat distribution, and muscle tone.

A common belief

Many people think body contouring is a weight loss method.

What actually happens

It is not. Liposuction removes fat deposits but does not treat obesity. Surgery only happens after you have lost the weight and kept it stable for a year.

Your next step at Jaipur Hospital

You should be weight stable for at least 12 months before surgery. The surgeon will review your medical history, weight history, and goals during the OPD visit. If you smoke, you must stop at least six weeks before and after surgery.

How will the doctor decide which tests I need before body contouring surgery?

In short

The doctor at Jaipur Hospital decides tests based on your medical history, the planned procedure, and hospital protocol. Common pre-operative tests include blood counts, liver and kidney function, blood sugar, coagulation profile, and ECG. Patients with prior bariatric surgery need nutritional deficiency screening. The anaesthesia team reviews all results before general anaesthesia.

In detail

Body contouring surgery uses general anaesthesia and takes 2 to 5 hours. The surgeon conducts a physical exam and assessments to determine if surgery is right for you.

Patients with massive weight loss often have co-morbidities such as sleep apnoea, hypertension, and diabetes that increase surgical risk. Bariatric patients are at risk for nutritional deficiencies affecting healing. The anaesthesia team requires baseline investigations for safe general anaesthesia.

Tests are tailored: a healthy patient having liposuction may need fewer tests than a post-bariatric patient having a lower body lift. The hospital's in-house diagnostic laboratory performs all required tests. The multidisciplinary team (anaesthesia, plastic surgery, medicine) reviews results to minimise complications.

A common belief

Patients often assume one standard test panel fits all.

What actually happens

In reality, a lower body lift on a post-bariatric patient with diabetes and sleep apnoea needs far more extensive workup than a mini-abdominoplasty on a healthy person. The anaesthesia team customises the list.

Your next step at Jaipur Hospital

Bring all previous medical records, bariatric surgery details, and current medications to the OPD. The surgeon will order specific tests during the consultation. Results are usually available within 24 hours. You must be nicotine-free for six weeks before surgery.

How soon should I expect improvement after body contouring surgery?

In short

After body contouring surgery at Jaipur Hospital, light activity resumes in two to three weeks. Full recovery takes six to eight weeks, and overall cosmetic results become fully apparent after at least three months.

In detail

Evidence indicates that pain lasts a few weeks and you may need support at home during the first week. Scars undergo remodelling for up to twelve months. Staged procedures have three to six month intervals between stages.

Final results can take up to two years to stabilise. Maintaining a stable weight is essential for long-lasting outcomes, as weight fluctuations can stretch the skin again.

A common belief

Many expect instant results.

What actually happens

In reality, swelling, scar maturation, and staged surgeries mean the final outcome takes months to years.

Your next step at Jaipur Hospital

Plan for two to three weeks off work and arrange an attendant for the first week. Follow the surgeon's instructions on wound care, compression garments, and activity restrictions. Attend all follow-up visits.

Are my expectations realistic for my anatomy and health regarding body contouring surgery?

In short

Realistic expectations depend on your weight stability, skin quality, overall health, and the specific areas you want to address. At Jaipur Hospital, your surgeon will assess these factors during a detailed consultation before any surgery is planned.

In detail

Evidence shows candidates should be weight stable for a minimum of twelve months before body contouring procedures.

You should be at or near your target weight, in good overall health without conditions that could complicate surgery or recovery, and a non-smoker or willing to quit several weeks before and after surgery.

Body contouring improves appearance, comfort, and clothing fit but cannot give a perfect body shape and does not help you lose more weight beyond the weight of the skin removed.

Patients with massive weight loss often have altered skin quality that can lead to scar migration and soft tissue laxity. The long-term result partly depends on your ability to maintain weight. If you regain a substantial amount of weight, the skin will stretch again. Your surgeon will explain what your anatomy can achieve and where the limits lie.

A common belief

Many patients expect a flawless silhouette.

What actually happens

Evidence shows surgery improves shape and comfort but cannot create perfection, and weight regain will stretch the skin again.

Your next step at Jaipur Hospital

Bring photos of your concerns and a list of your medical history to the consultation. Be ready to discuss your weight history, current stability, and any chronic conditions.

How can I decide whether to seek advice about liposuction?

In short

You may consider seeking advice about liposuction if you have localised fat deposits that do not respond to diet and exercise, and you are at or near a stable weight. Liposuction is a body contouring procedure, not a weight loss operation. A consultation at Jaipur Hospital can help you understand whether it suits your goals.

In detail

Evidence shows that liposuction removes stubborn fat from areas such as the abdomen, thighs, arms, or back, but it does not treat obesity or prevent future weight gain. the most suitable candidates are adults with good skin elasticity and realistic expectations.

If you have significant loose skin, liposuction alone may not give the contour you want, and a combined procedure such as a tummy tuck or body lift might be more appropriate. Your overall health, smoking status, and any medical conditions will also be assessed.

The surgeon will examine the areas of concern, discuss the likely scar pattern, and explain the recovery timeline, which typically involves light activity in two to three weeks and full recovery in six to eight weeks.

A common belief

Many people think liposuction will tighten loose skin or help them lose weight.

What actually happens

It does neither. If skin elasticity is poor, the contour may look worse after fat removal alone.

Your next step at Jaipur Hospital

Make a list of the areas that bother you and note your weight history. Bring any recent blood test results to the appointment. Be prepared to discuss your expectations honestly.

How will appearance, function, and realistic expectations be discussed for body contouring surgery?

In short

At Jaipur Hospital, your surgeon will discuss appearance, function, and realistic expectations during the preoperative consultation. The surgeon examines your skin quality, tissue laxity, and body proportions. You will review the planned incisions, expected scars, and the likely improvement in contour, comfort, and clothing fit.

In detail

Evidence shows body contouring surgery improves physical functioning, psychological wellbeing, and social functioning. However, surgery cannot give a perfect body shape or cause further weight loss beyond the weight of removed skin.

Scars are long-term, though placed in less noticeable areas like the bikini line or natural creases. The surgeon explains that final results take months to appear and scars mature over 12 months. Weight stability is emphasised, as regain stretches skin and reverses benefits.

Functional gains include reduced skin infections, rashes, and pain from heavy skin folds. The discussion covers the staged nature of surgery if multiple areas need treatment.

A common belief

Many patients expect a flawless shape.

What actually happens

Surgery removes excess skin and tightens tissue, but scars remain and weight gain can undo results. The conversation focuses on honest trade-offs, not perfection.

Your next step at Jaipur Hospital

Prepare questions about scar placement, recovery timeline, and activity restrictions. Bring photos of your goals if helpful. The surgeon will outline what is achievable for your anatomy.

Which symptoms should prompt me to see a specialist for body contouring surgery?

In short

You should see a specialist at Jaipur Hospital if you have excess, sagging skin that affects your daily life after significant weight loss. Common symptoms include skin folds that cause rashes, fungal infections, or irritation, difficulty finding clothes that fit, physical discomfort or pain from heavy hanging skin, and reduced mobility or self-confidence because of loose tissue.

In detail

Evidence shows that excess skin after massive weight loss leads to several functional problems. Skin folds trap moisture and heat, increasing the risk of skin infections, fungus, and rashes. Heavy skin can be painful and limit movement.

Many patients report difficulty finding clothing that fits well and a negative impact on self-confidence and body image. These symptoms are not only cosmetic; they affect hygiene, comfort, and quality of life.

A specialist evaluates whether surgical removal of the excess skin and tightening of the underlying tissues can relieve these issues. The surgeon also checks for weight stability, nutritional status, and any medical conditions such as diabetes or hypertension that could affect healing.

A common belief

Some people wait years thinking these are just cosmetic concerns.

What actually happens

In fact, chronic skin infections, pain, and restricted mobility are medical issues that surgery can improve. Non-surgical treatments like creams or powders only manage symptoms temporarily.

Your next step at Jaipur Hospital

If you notice persistent skin irritation, recurrent infections in skin folds, pain from heavy skin folds, or if loose skin limits your activity, schedule an OPD visit. Bring records of your weight history and any recent blood tests. The surgeon will examine the affected areas and discuss whether body contouring is appropriate.

How will the results change my care plan for body contouring surgery?

In short

Test results at Jaipur Hospital directly shape your surgical plan. Abnormal blood counts, uncontrolled diabetes, nutritional deficiencies, or cardiac issues may delay surgery until optimised. The anaesthesia team uses results to plan safe general anaesthesia. The surgeon may stage procedures differently or choose less extensive techniques based on your fitness.

In detail

Body contouring often requires multiple staged procedures. Test results determine the timing and sequence. For example, low haemoglobin or albumin may need correction before a major lower body lift. Uncontrolled diabetes increases wound healing risk.

Cardiac or respiratory issues may limit anaesthesia options or require ICU backup. The multidisciplinary team reviews all results. If risks are high, the surgeon may recommend a smaller first-stage procedure (such as panniculectomy) rather than a full lower body lift.

Smoking status also changes the plan: you must be nicotine-free for six weeks before and after surgery. The goal is to minimise wound healing complications, which are the most common issue.

A common belief

Patients often want everything done at once.

What actually happens

But a lower body lift takes 2 to 5 hours under general anaesthesia. If your haemoglobin is low or diabetes uncontrolled, wound healing suffers. Staging surgery three to six months apart is safer.

Your next step at Jaipur Hospital

After tests, the surgeon discusses the findings and adjusts the plan. You may need medical optimisation (iron, protein, diabetes control) before a surgery date is given. Staging intervals are typically three to six months between procedures.

What should I do if symptoms persist or worsen after body contouring surgery?

In short

If you notice increasing pain, spreading redness, fever, or fluid leaking from the wound after body contouring surgery, contact Jaipur Hospital immediately. These signs may point to infection, seroma, or wound breakdown that needs prompt medical review.

In detail

Evidence shows the most common complications of body contouring procedures relate to wound healing, including wound infection, wound breakdown, and seroma formation. Altered skin quality after massive weight loss can increase the incidence of poor wound healing and scar-related issues.

You may also experience pain for a few weeks, which is usually managed with prescribed medicines. Moving around, climbing stairs, or getting up from a low seat can increase discomfort.

If you develop new swelling, a sudden increase in pain, warmth around the incision, or a foul-smelling discharge, these are warning signs that should not be ignored. Early reporting allows the surgical team to intervene quickly and reduce the risk of a more serious problem.

A common belief

Many patients think some wound ooze or extra pain is normal and wait too long.

What actually happens

Evidence shows wound healing problems are the most common complication, and early review prevents bigger issues.

Your next step at Jaipur Hospital

Keep the hospital's contact numbers handy and call the ward or the emergency line if any symptom feels worse than expected. Your surgeon will usually review you in the first week and then at regular intervals. Do not wait for a scheduled visit if you are worried.

What qualifications and experience should I look for in the treating surgeon for body contouring surgery?

In short

Choose a surgeon with a recognised plastic surgery qualification (MCh or DNB in Plastic Surgery) and specific experience in post-bariatric and body contouring procedures. At Jaipur Hospital, the plastic surgery department performs abdominoplasty, liposuction, thigh and arm lifts, and lower body lifts. Ask how many similar cases the surgeon does each year and whether they handle staged, combined procedures.

In detail

Body contouring after massive weight loss is complex. Evidence shows these patients often have nutritional deficiencies, co-morbidities like diabetes or sleep apnoea, and altered skin quality that increase surgical risk.

A surgeon experienced in this field will plan staged procedures — typically starting with panniculectomy or lower body lift — and coordinate with nutrition, anaesthesia, and critical care teams. They should be comfortable managing wound healing complications, seromas, and scar revisions.

Membership in professional bodies such as the Association of Plastic Surgeons of India indicates ongoing education. The hospital's NABH accreditation ensures safety standards in the operating theatre and ICU.

A common belief

General surgeons or cosmetic surgeons without formal plastic surgery training may not be equipped for the nutritional, anaesthetic, and wound-healing challenges of post-bariatric patients.

What actually happens

Evidence shows these cases need a multidisciplinary approach and staged surgical planning.

Your next step at Jaipur Hospital

At your consultation, ask the surgeon about their training, case volume, and complication rates for body contouring. Request to see anonymised before-and-after photos of patients with similar concerns. Confirm the surgeon has admitting privileges at a hospital with ICU backup.

Overview

Body Contouring Surgery: what to know

What body contouring surgery is and how excess skin develops

Body contouring surgery is a group of plastic surgery procedures that address areas of excess fat and skin. It is most often considered after massive weight loss following bariatric surgery or significant lifestyle changes. When you carry extra weight, your skin and tissue stretch to accommodate the larger body size.

This stretching causes the skin and tissue to lose elasticity over time. When you then lose a significant amount of weight, the stretched skin cannot conform to your new shape and may sag and hang loosely from the body. This excess, sagging skin is the condition that body contouring surgery aims to correct.

Surgery can reshape your body by removing this excess skin and fat and tightening the underlying tissue to give a firmer, smoother look.

Symptoms of excess skin and warning signs needing urgent care

Warning signs after surgery
  • Wound infection signs Increasing redness, warmth, swelling, or pus
  • Sudden severe pain Heavy bleeding from the incision
  • High fever Temperature above normal range
  • Shortness of breath Chest pain needs emergency care
Emergency? Call 0141 255 1500, 24×7

Excess skin after weight loss can cause several physical symptoms. It can be heavy and painful.

Skin folds often trap moisture and heat, which increases the risk of:

  • Skin infections
  • Fungal infections
  • Rashes

Many people also find it hard to find clothing that fits well. The appearance of sagging skin may affect self-confidence and body image. The impact on mobility, body image, and mood can prevent people from fully re-integrating into daily life.

After surgery, you should contact your healthcare provider the same day if you notice signs of wound infection such as increasing redness, warmth, swelling, or pus. Sudden severe pain, heavy bleeding from the incision, or a high fever also need urgent assessment. Shortness of breath or chest pain requires immediate emergency care.

Causes of excess skin and factors that increase surgical risk

Factors that raise surgical risk
Nutritional deficiencies
Common after bariatric surgery; affect healing and increase wound complications
Obesity-related conditions
Sleep apnea, hypertension, diabetes increase surgical risk
Weight fluctuations
Gain or loss after surgery can worsen aesthetic results

The primary cause of excess skin is significant weight loss after the skin has been stretched by obesity. Bariatric surgery is the most effective intervention for sustained weight loss in morbidly obese patients and often leads to this condition. Weight loss through diet and exercise can also result in redundant skin.

Several factors increase the risk of complications from body contouring surgery. Smoking impairs wound healing, and patients must be nicotine-free for at least six weeks before and after elective surgery. Patients who have had bariatric surgery are at risk for nutritional deficiencies that can affect healing and increase wound complications.

Medical conditions related to previous obesity, such as sleep apnea, hypertension, and diabetes, can increase surgical risk. Weight fluctuations after surgery, whether gain or loss, can affect the aesthetic results and lead to poorer outcomes. Anxiety, emotional eating, binge eating, and loss of control over eating have all been associated with weight regain, which can stretch the skin again. Genetic factors also play a role in weight regain.

How excess skin is assessed: examination and tests

A plastic surgeon will conduct a physical exam to assess the amount and location of excess skin and tissue. The surgeon evaluates skin quality, the presence of hernias, and the degree of muscle separation in the abdomen. Your medical history is reviewed, including your weight loss history, stability of weight, nutritional status, and any co-morbidities such as diabetes or hypertension.

Blood tests are typically done to check:

  • Haemoglobin
  • Blood sugar
  • Liver and kidney function
  • Nutritional markers like protein and vitamin levels

If you have had bariatric surgery, specific deficiencies such as iron, vitamin B12, and vitamin D are checked. A psychological assessment may be considered to ensure you have realistic expectations and support for the recovery process.

Non-surgical options and when body contouring surgery is advised

When surgery is advised
  1. Weight stable 12 months Guidelines recommend minimum 12 months
  2. At target weight You should be at or near your target weight
  3. Good overall health No conditions that complicate surgery

Non-surgical options cannot remove large amounts of hanging skin. Skin care, compression garments, and treating rashes or infections in skin folds can manage symptoms but do not change the underlying excess tissue. Liposuction removes stubborn fat deposits but is not a weight loss surgery and does not address loose skin. Cryolipolysis is a non-surgical technique for localised fat reduction, but it does not remove excess skin.

Body contouring surgery is advised when you have achieved a stable weight. Guidelines recommend being weight stable for a minimum of 12 months before surgery. Some sources advise maintaining weight loss for at least six months. You should be at or near your target weight.

You must be in good overall health without medical conditions that could complicate surgery or recovery. You need to have realistic expectations about the outcomes; surgery improves appearance and comfort but cannot give a perfect body shape or cause further weight loss beyond the weight of the removed skin. Surgery is often done in stages, with three to six months between procedures to allow healing.

Preparing for Body Contouring Surgery

Preparing for surgery

Do

  • Be weight stable 12 months
  • Review medicines with surgeon
  • Bring loose clothing and medicines
  • Arrange an attendant

Before body contouring surgery, your surgical team will ask you to be weight stable for at least 12 months, as weight fluctuations can affect healing and long-term results. You will have a physical examination and other assessments to check if surgery is right for you.

Candidates should be in good overall health without medical conditions that could complicate surgery or recovery. If you smoke, you will be advised to quit several weeks before the procedure and stay smoke-free during recovery. All patients should be nicotine free for a minimum of six weeks before and after any elective surgical procedure.

Your surgeon will review any medicines you take, including blood thinners or supplements, and tell you which to stop or continue. You will need routine blood tests and possibly a chest X-ray or ECG, which can be done at our in-house diagnostic laboratory. On the day of surgery, you must fast for at least six hours.

Bring comfortable loose clothing, any regular medicines, and personal items for an overnight stay. An attendant can stay with you in the room.

How Body Contouring Surgery Is Done

Body contouring refers to a broad field of plastic surgery procedures that address areas of excess fat and/or skin. At Jaipur Hospital, the plastic surgery department offers several techniques. Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) removes excess skin and tightens the abdominal muscles. Liposuction removes stubborn fat deposits from the abdomen, thighs, arms or back but is not a weight loss surgery.

Thigh or arm lift tightens loose skin on the thighs or upper arms. Lower body lift is a circumferential lift for the abdomen, buttocks and thighs. Your surgeon will advise which technique or combination suits you after examining your skin quality and goals. Most people need a combination of surgeries to get the look they seek.

Excess skin removal often takes place in stages. Typically, panniculectomy or lower body lift procedures are performed as the first stage. Breast reduction or lift procedures can be combined with arm or thigh lift. Remaining procedures can be done as a third stage. If there is significant facial laxity, a face lift can be performed, often as the final stage.

On the day of surgery, you will be admitted and taken to a modular operation theatre. The operation takes 2 to 5 hours under general anaesthesia. The surgeon makes incisions, removes excess skin and fat, and tightens the underlying tissue. Incisions are placed in the hairline, natural creases or covered areas such as the bikini line when possible. You will stay in hospital for 1 to 3 nights.

Risks and Possible Complications of Body Contouring Surgery

Common complications
  • Most common Wound healing issues
  • 12 months Scar remodelling time

Excess skin removal procedures are major surgeries.

The most common complications are related to wound healing, including:

  • Wound infection
  • Wound breakdown
  • Seroma formation

Altered skin quality in patients who were previously obese can lead to increased incidence of poor wound healing, scar migration and skin laxity leading to aesthetic issues. You will have scars from the incisions. Scars typically require 12 months to go through the remodelling process.

Potential risks also include:

  • Bleeding
  • Blood clots
  • Asymmetry
  • Changes in skin sensation
  • Anaesthesia-related risks

Bariatric patients are at risk for nutritional deficiencies that can affect healing and put them at risk for wound healing complications. Massive weight loss patients often have other medical conditions related to their previous obesity, including sleep apnea, hypertension and diabetes that can increase the risk of surgery. Smoking increases the risk of poor wound healing and other complications.

In studies of non-surgical fat reduction, mild short-term side effects such as erythema, swelling, bruising, sensitivity and pain were noted and generally resolved within a few weeks. Paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, a rare condition where a firm fat mass develops at the treatment site months later, has been reported in isolated cases. No persistent ulcerations, scarring, paresthesias, haematomas, blistering, bleeding, hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation, or infections have been described in those studies.

Recovery and Aftercare After Body Contouring Surgery

Recovery milestones
  1. 2 to 3 weeks Light activity usually possible
  2. 6 to 8 weeks Full recovery for most procedures

After surgery, you can expect pain for a few weeks. Your healthcare provider will prescribe pain medicine and offer tips to ease discomfort. You may have more pain when moving around, climbing stairs or getting off the couch. It helps to have a loved one or support person stay with you during the first week of recovery.

Light activity is usually possible in 2 to 3 weeks, and full recovery takes 6 to 8 weeks. How you feel during recovery and when you can resume activities depends on the procedures performed. A full recovery can take several months. Your body needs time to heal between procedures and after the final surgery.

Typically, the time period between stages is three to six months to allow for recovery and healing. It may take up to two years to achieve final results from body contouring. Typically, body contouring procedures require at least three months for the overall cosmetic results to be fully apparent.

You should call your healthcare provider if you experience signs of infection such as:

  • Increasing redness, warmth, pus or fever
  • Sudden swelling or pain that is not relieved by medicine
  • Shortness of breath or chest pain
  • Any other concern

Attend all follow-up appointments so your surgeon can check wound healing and scar progress.

Results of Body Contouring Surgery

Reported improvements after surgery
  • 28.5% Physical functioning
  • 45.7% Psychological wellbeing
  • 24% Social functioning
  • 17.6% Weight regain of at least 10%

Plastic surgery can improve appearance, but it cannot give you a perfect body shape. It also cannot help you lose more weight beyond the weight of the skin your surgeon removes. In studies, body contouring surgery resulted in statistically significant improvements in physical functioning, psychological wellbeing and social functioning, as well as a reduction in BMI.

Pooled analysis demonstrated a significant improvement in physical functioning by 28.5%, psychological wellbeing by 45.7%, and social functioning by 24%. The benefit of body contouring surgery on sustaining weight loss was also observed; patients who underwent body contouring maintained weight loss for a significantly longer period than a matched cohort who did not have the surgery.

Weight loss alone may not result in sustained improvements in quality of life. The long-term effects of body contouring surgery partly depend on your ability to keep the weight off. Everyone experiences weight fluctuations throughout life. But if you regain a substantial amount of weight after body contouring surgeries, your skin will stretch.

The major factor that affects the longevity of results in post-bariatric body contouring is weight fluctuations. If patients are able to maintain their weight, long-lasting results can be achieved. The main issues in this patient population are related to scar migration and soft tissue laxity leading to contour deformities.

Weight regain following bariatric surgery varies according to duration of follow-up and the bariatric surgical procedure performed. The incidence of weight regain of at least 10% was 17.6% in one pooled analysis.

Anxiety, emotional eating, food urges, binge eating and loss of control when eating have been positively associated with weight regain.:

  • Anxiety
  • Emotional eating
  • Food urges
  • Binge eating
  • Loss of control when eating

Fruit consumption, HDL levels and quality of life have been negatively associated with weight regain.:

  • Fruit consumption
  • HDL levels
